Compounding is the science and art of combining, mixing or altering ingredients to prepare a customised medicine tailored to an individual patient’s needs, as prescribed by a healthcare practitioner.

Before the mass production of medicines became widespread, pharmacists routinely prepared medicines for individual patients. Each preparation reflected the ingredients, strength and dosage form prescribed for that person.

Today, commercially available medicines meet many patients’ needs, but they may not suit everyone. You may have difficulty swallowing tablets, need a particular strength, or have an allergy or sensitivity to an ingredient. Compounding continues this tradition of individualised care, with your pharmacist and prescriber working together to assess your requirements.

If you have a compounding enquiry, our pharmacists are happy to discuss your prescription and individual needs.
